Knowing my learners through knowing myself

So much to reflect on but the key point that I have taken from today is...

Connections

* Connecting with the learning and resources. Doing the scaffolding/building prior to ensure that I have the knowledge and planning to support the learning going forward. Having a ' Growth Mindset'.

* Connecting with my learners. 'Putting myself in their shoes.' Providing opportunities to learn in a variety of ways.

Reflections

I really enjoyed digging deeper into PAT and gaining a greater understanding of the valuable tool this is to inform my planning, resourcing and teaching practices.

Having a visual library of resources and examples of planning to support me on the journey moving forward with implementing my maths programme in a more succinct way. The chance to dig deeper into some of the tools and create resources that I will use within my teaching.

  1. Kia ora Rachael,

I agree, we covered a lot of important aspects of developing an effective maths programme, and I hope it was a useful day. Your focus on connections, both with the learning and with your learners, is really spot on. I’m glad you found the idea of putting yourself in students’ shoes important, as it supports building our own understanding of maths concepts first and makes our teaching clearer for learners. It’s also great to hear that digging deeper into PAT and the planning resources was useful for you. I’m looking forward to seeing how today’s learning supports you with your maths programme. Enjoy facilitating Maths Talks too :)

  2. I am so excited for you Rach! You really are enjoying your class and MPI. I can see that excitement and enthusiam and the spring in your step! I love how you are excited you are when you look at your data and what you need to do to make further progress. Your Year 4's are a great group who will require acceleration because they are little sponges and we don't want to them to stagnate.
    Great mahi!

  3. Kia ora Rachael,
I'm envious of how succinctly you summed up the day (by comparison to my own novel of waffle!)
The resource banks are fantastic for taking the pressure off of recreating the wheel, while also implementing a degree of change, which can bring its own cognitive load.
On the topic of "connections", might we have encountered each other previously? Perhaps even way back in the dark ages of Teachers College? I'm certain we have crossed paths somewhere along the way.
